River Jude Phoenix
23 August 1970 - 31 October 1993

When River Phoenix passed away at the age of 23 on 31 October 1993, he not only broke the hearts of his family and friends - but also those of his countless fans and admirers across the world. We were all left to wonder why, and reflect on what might have been.

River was a gentle, sensitive soul who loved everything and everybody. He had been a strict vegan since he was a young boy - and was often seen or heard campaigning for his favourite charity, PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He was also concerned about the state of the planet, as highlighted in this quote:

"I've just bought 800 acres of forest on the border of Panama and Costa Rica. I want to buy the last "first growth forest" and turn it into a national park. It's a human tragedy of immense proportions. Many native Indians in that region are losing their homes daily, and it's going to affect both you and me, because that's where most of the world's oxygen comes from. The Amazon rain forests are the world's lungs and without them we will not be able to breath. It's a very scary thought and it's not too far off."

He was also, of course, a highly talented and respected actor - his most memorable performance being that of Chris Chambers in 'Stand by Me.' Throughout his acting career, River made some lasting friendships - Sidney Poitier, Richard Harries, Harrison Ford and Dan Ackroyd - amongst others. Most of these friends were present at the memorial service held for River, in Los Angeles a few weeks after his passing.

Music though, was River's greatest love. He was close to sealing a recording contract for his band - Aleka's Attic, at the time of his passing. He wrote most of the band's songs himself, and was once asked to write a song for one of his later movies - 'The Thing Called Love.' He did write a song - 'Lone Star State of Mine,' which he also performed in the movie.

He was a loving, caring and humble human being, who had no care for the Hollywood lifestyle - always preferring to be at home with his family.

River was a bright, shining star who now shines down on his family, friends and fans - from Heaven.

Well it's been 15 years since you was sadly taken from this planet, although i never knew you personally it was such a terrible thing to happen to someone who has touched my heart forever and also for one so young. Forever in my heart Love you always River.

A year today that I had watched Stand By Me and realised who you really were, rest in piece River. You will never be forgotten ever.

The first film that I saw with River Phoenix was - Stand by ME - Geheimis eines Sommers. I was 11 years old and from this moment on a fan. I was very much shocked, when I experienced to 01.11.1993 which he died. He died to 31.10.1993. At my 13. Birthday. River Phoenix was an very unusual talented actor. An exception talent. Unforgotten his role as Mike Waters in 'My own private Idaho'. His life was short. Much too briefly. He leaves a big gap. But he was loved. Of his family, friends and his fans in all world.
He's remain unforgotten forever and in our hearts he live on.

River - you are the only protect

1993: 1 was 13, and in freshman year. i didn't know you, river. not until this year.

you left the world without my knowledge of your existence. you are too good for this selfish world. the world does not deserve someone as beautiful as you. you are an angel who walked amongst humans.

i'll see you one day when i succumb to the tests of this world. and please, light my way up there.

We Love You

Words cannot even explain how much we all love you River. The impression you left on this world has reached farther into our hearts than we can imagine. You must have died because God thought that you had accomplished your task of changing the perspective of life of your family, friends, and fans, and He must have needed you and your beautiful soul to help Him up in Heaven. Although I don't know why God didn't let him stay to help us here on earth some more, I wish that He would have let him. Smoking and drugs are never the answer, and we all know that because of River, I just wish he had known. Rest in loving peace, my love

River died when i was only 1 and my biggest regret is tht i wasnt old enough to appreciate him when he was here on this cruel earth he is my hero and i just wish he was here today living his dream of living in the country with his wife and kids . i only wish that when i die i live my dream of meeting an angel and my hero.i dreamt about him last night i was driving in a car and he was in the car next to me and we stopped and he got out of the car opened my door and hugged me and said'it ok to cry and wish'then he looked up to the sky and walked away river will always be missed and loved
